- South African citizens in need receive social grants from the government. In South Africa, SASSA is in charge of social grants. People who are at risk of poverty and require government assistance to improve their standard of living are eligible for social grants.
The elderly, people with disabilities, and parents with young children are frequently among these.
A South African citizen, a legal permanent resident, or a refugee must apply for a social grant (proof of such status must be provided). They must be South African citizens as well.
What is a means test?
- A “means test” applies to some social grants, such as child support, disability, care dependency, and social relief of distress. SASSA will assess your income and assets to determine your eligibility for a social grant under the means test. The means test determines your eligibility for a grant designed for people who do not have enough money to live on.
Care dependency grant
Parents with disabled children who work full-time may be eligible for care dependency grants. What is the total amount of money that will be distributed as part of this grant?
- R1 860 per child, per month.
How do you know if you qualify for the grant?
- The child must be under the age of 18 and permanently disabled, as determined by a medical officer, to be eligible for the care dependency grant. If you’re married, you and your spouse must both meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the means test. The following articles will help you with your Sassa application.
